Group A or Group B After Class 10: How to Actually Decide

PCM or PCB is the first real fork in a science student's life. Here is how to think about it without guessing.

Group A (PCM) leads to engineering through GUJCET and JEE Main. Group B (PCB) leads to medicine through GUJCET and NEET. The choice should be made on which subjects the student can sustain for two years, not on which career sounds better at fifteen.

What the two groups actually are

Group A is Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Group B is Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Both are science streams, both keep the Class 12 board exam identical in Physics and Chemistry, and both allow GUJCET.

The difference is the third subject, and the third subject decides the entrance exam. Mathematics leads to JEE Main and engineering admission. Biology leads to NEET and medical admission.

The question most families ask first, and why it is the wrong one

The usual first question is which group has more scope. Both do. Engineering and medicine are both large fields with plenty of room, and neither is closing.

The better question is which subject the student can work at for two years without dread. A student who finds Mathematics genuinely painful will not out-study that feeling for two years, and a student who cannot memorise volume will struggle with Biology no matter how capable they are.

A practical way to test it

Look at the Class 10 marks in Mathematics and in Biology separately, not the overall science score. The overall score hides exactly the signal you need.

Then look at effort, not just marks. A 78 in Mathematics earned comfortably is a better signal than an 88 earned through three months of misery.

Can the decision be changed later?

Changing group after Class 11 has started is difficult and costly in time, because the third subject is a full year of content. It is not impossible, but it should be treated as a decision you make once.

This is why it is worth spending a serious evening on it rather than deciding in the queue at admission.

What we do about it

Before a student joins a Class 11 batch here, Darshit Sir looks at the Class 10 marks and talks to the student directly about which subjects they actually want to sit with. If the answer is unclear, it is better to say so than to fill a seat.
